The inflatable Halloween party

The inflatable Halloween party on Joe Neve's front lawn in West Hempstead has lit up the street, and all are invited.

"Neve, 37, of 456 Chesman St., has mounted a display of 175 inflatable Halloween characters on his front lawn, and his adjacent neighbors' lawns. Among characters displayed: Winnie the Pooh, Scooby-Doo, Snoopy, Shrek and SpongeBob SquarePants.
They are lit-up giants," said Frank Peduzzi, who lives across the street and has Neve's inflatables on his lawn. "They [the kids] are starstruck."

Said 5-year-old Fizza Dar, who lives next door: "My favorite is when they glow in the nighttime. Tigger is my favorite."

Neve's 3-year-old son, Michael, who said he helped his dad set up, could hardly control himself as he ran around, pointing out his favorite characters.

"Look at the airplane one," he shouted to his mother, Suzanne Neve.

Neve said he began decorating four years ago for his children. He added more when he noticed he was drawing crowds.

"I just wanted more kids to see it," said Neve, who is an independent contractor. "I want to make people smile. I get a lot of smiles every night."

The inflatables run off four 20-amp circuits that are plugged into exterior outlets Neve had installed over the years. The price tag for the inflatables was about $5,000, but he said he didn't care because all of it was done for the kids.

Many of his neighbors said Neve was outside every day, even in the rain, adding pieces and adjusting those that blew over in the wind.

"Talk about dedication," Peduzzi said. "If one went down, here he was ... yelling, 'Scooby's down! Scooby's down!'"

The Halloween display will be lit Monday through Thursday from 6 to 11:30 p.m. and Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m.

"It is quite amazing," said Kristen Holder, 20, who lives down the block. "It's attracting a lot of cars. There is so much traffic here on the dead end."

"This block was never so popular," said Diane Catalano, who owns the home across the street and also displays some of Neve's decorations. "We didn't even buy candy" in the past.

Said Nicole Roes, 11, of nearby Maxwell Street: "It's a tradition. We like it."

Neve said he's already thinking about Christmas. For that holiday, he plans to lay out 300 inflatables.
